200-level error codes

The 200-level error codes (codes 200 to 299) are returned in the TU4.0 or TU4.1 fixed format response (FFR) due to an invalid subscriber code or control field issues.

The following error code table is derived from full TransUnion User Guides. The latest User Guides are available in this site’s Document Repository.

Code Description Common Reasons for Error Troubleshooting Tips
201 Bureau market missing or invalid. Occurs when market value is:
  • Not a numeric value.
  • Missing from the fixed format inquiry (FFI).

  • Check to ensure the Market Value (2-digit numeric code) is populated in the FFI correctly.
203 Bureau submarket missing or invalid. Occurs when submarket value is:
  • An unrecognized value.
  • Missing from the fixed format inquiry (FFI).

  • Check to ensure the Submarket Value (2-digit numeric or alpha code) is populated in the FFI correctly.
  • If the value is alphabetic, verify it is all UPPERCASE.
205 Member code missing or invalid. Occurs when Member code value is:
  • Not a numeric value.
  • Missing from the fixed format inquiry.
  • Check to ensure the member code value (8-digit numeric) is populated in the FFI correctly.
209 Password missing/invalid.

Password value is missing or incorrect in the fixed format inquiry (FFI).

  • Verify proper password is being used.
  • Contact your TransUnion sales representative if you do not know your password.
211 EP code is valid only for employment services. Occurs when inquiry:
  • Requests an employment service without including the EP permissible purpose code in the EU01 segment.
  • Includes the EP code while requesting a non-employment service.
  • Refer to the TransUnion TU4.0 or TU4.1 manual for proper coding specifications for the EU01 segment.
  • Recheck your settings and include the EP permissible purpose code or remove it, depending on service requested.
212 Missing or invalid Permissible Purpose or End User field(s). Information in the End Usage (EU01) segment of the fixed format inquiry (FFI) is missing or invalid.
  • Refer to the TransUnion TU4.0 or TU4.1 manual for proper coding specifications for the EU01 segment.
  • Recheck your FFI settings.
213 Not a valid permissible purpose code for service/model requested. Information in the End Usage (EU01) segment of the fixed format inquiry (FFI) is missing or is invalid for the service requested.
  • Refer to the TransUnion TU4.0 or TU4.1 manual for proper coding specifications for the EU01 segment.
  • Check the permissible purpose codes valid for the service you are requesting.
  • Recheck your FFI settings.
215 Invalid access code. A security freeze exists on a consumer file and the input access code does not match the file access code.
  • Verify with consumer that the correct access code is being used.
  • Refer to the TransUnion TU4.0 or TU4.1 manual for proper coding specifications.
  • Recheck your FFI settings.
216 Input use type code does not match use type code established for this subscriber code. The use type code in the EU01 segment of the fixed format inquiry (FFI) is different than expected per the subscriber's settings.
  • Refer to the TransUnion TU4.0 or TU4.1 manual for proper coding specification for the EU01 segment
  • Recheck the settings in the fixed format inquiry.
